Vanuatu Republicans Endorse 4 Women For Port Vila Seats
Party coordinator: female candidates stand good chance

By Godwin Ligo

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (Vanuatu Daily Post, July 4, 2013) – The Vanuatu Republican Party (VRP) has endorsed four women candidates to run in the Port Vila Municipal Council election in November 2013.

The four women candidates will be standing in the Anamburu Ward while male candidates will be contesting in other municipal wards.

The Vanuatu Republican Party National Coordinator, George Siri, told Daily Post that the names of the four VRP women candidates will be released shortly as preparations for the Port Vila Municipal election gets underway.

He said this was a major step forward by VRP in realizing the importance of political gender equity and greater participation of women in the Port Vila Municipal decision-making process.

"Vanuatu women have the equal rights with their male counterparts to participate in the decisions of the city of Port Vila," he said.

On the question of four women winning four seats in the Anabouru Ward, the VRP National Coordinator said they stand a good chance to go through because a high percentage of the women in Anamburu area are calling for equal opportunity in all good developments of family needs in the Capital but have not had their voices heard in the council for 33 years now.

He said this major change in the VRP political party policies has been made since the Santo rural MP and Minister of Trade Marcellino Pipite, took over the reigns as the new President of the Vanuatu Republican Party (VRP) in Vanuatu.
