Pacific Island Business Associations Assessment

–Survey of Organizational Strengths and Needs

Maui Pacific Center, in partnership with the East-West Center, is working with business associations in the Pacific islands to assist them in assessing their capacity to meet the needs of their members and create strong organizations.

The assessment guides the association in looking at nine areas:

  • Association profile
  • Organization
  • Membership development and retention
  • Programs and services
  • Finances
  • Communications
  • Public policy and advocacy
  • Staffing
  • Facilities, equipment and information management
MPC's Diane Zachary meets with Women in Business, Fiji on an assessment.
The strengths of the association are identified, along with possible areas for improvement. One of the goals of this project is to identify best practices that can be shared with other associations in the region.

Another goal is to gather and share samples of organizational materials from successful associations. Lastly, resources to strengthen the region's business associations and their members are being identified and made available via this website.

History of the Project

Maui Pacific Center (MPC), in cooperation with East-West Center, hosted a conference in November 1999 on The Role of Business Associations in Pacific Island Economic Growth. Private sector and government leaders from 11 Pacific island countries and territories representing 17 business associations attended the conference. Attendees endorsed the concept of assessing the organizational development needs of the region's business associations, and asked Maui Pacific Center for assistance. The assessment project
is the result of their request.
