FRENCH POLYNESIA CYCLONE DEATHS RISE TO 10
PAPEETE, French Polynesia (April 29, 1998 - Radio Australia)---The death toll from Cyclone Alan, which hit French Polynesia's Leeward Islands last weekend, has risen to 10 with the discovery of the body of a missing three-year-old girl.
Earlier, a 65-year old man died in the hospital from injuries sustained during the tropical storm, which left 26 people seriously injured and 750 buildings destroyed.
Most seriously affected were the islands of Tahaa and Raiatea.
Officials say electricity and water supplies to large parts of the islands are still cut and schools remained shut today as engineers worked to restore damaged facilities.
It is feared the number of deaths could rise further, as search and rescue operations continue.
