KING OF TONGA APPROVES GOVERNMENT APPOINTMENTS

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (March 24, 1998 - PACNEWS)---Tonga's King, Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, has approved several key government appointment, including Minister of Lands, Survey and Natural Resources and governors of the northern island groups of Vava'u and Ha'apai, Radio Tonga reports.

Tu'l'afitu, who was the Governor of Vava'u, has been appointed to the post of Minister of Lands, Survey and Natural Resources. He replaces former minister Fakafanua, who resigned following charges of fraud and bribery.

The new Governor of Vava'u is Captain Ma'ulupekotofa Tuita, who previously served in a number of overseas Ministry of Foreign Affairs posts.

Fielakepa, the King's former Private Secretary, is the new Governor of Ha'apai.

King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV also made two acting appointments in the Palace Office.

Senior Assistant Secretary Sateki 'Ahio now is Acting Private Secretary.

The Secretary of the Tonga Traditions Committee, Tu'ivanuavou Vaea, now is Acting Deputy Private Secretary.
